I started listening to the Lil’ Smokies after they won the 2015 Telluride Band Competition at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Pretty much each year, I find out who won and then try and find out why. For Missoula, Montana’s the Lil’ Smokies, I knew right away it was not only because of their musicianship but their songwriting as well. Add a heavy touring schedule, and you have the makings of a fun band that knows what they are doing.
4 Peaks was glad to have the Lil’ Smokies out in 2019 to play two sets, a Cascade Mountain Stage set and a late-night Lava Rock set. And that’s not counting Jake’s awesome sit-in with Los Lobos, or the after-hours jam sessions in the campground. This Blast from the Past set includes many songs from their new album Tornillo, produced by Bill Reynolds (The Avett Brothers, Band of Horses). When festival life returns, you can bet the Lil’ Smokies will be out there pickin’ & grinnin’!
Highlight: The boys rip through some traditional bluegrass with Cryin’ Holy unto the Lord.
