Lava Rock Stage

I’ve seen Steve Kimock perform with many different bands, from Grateful Dead offshoots such as Phil & Friends, The Other Ones, and Ratdog to his own bands Zero, KVHW, and Steve Kimock & Friends. I’ve seen him in small clubs in Santa Cruz and large festivals in San Francisco. The one common thread throughout them all is his guitar tone. Whether he’s rocking his 1972 Charles Lobue Explorer through his Dumble 50-watt amp or sitting down playing his Fender Stringmaster pedal steel, the man knows tone.
When Kimock brings his talented friends with him, the band knows how to put on a show. Their 70-minute 4 Peaks set to close out Thursday’s performances had a little bit of everything. Touring on the release of 2017’s Satellite City, the band Kimock mixed in old covers with his newer originals. Expertly blending blues, jazz, and world fusion, the band kept their audience engaged through the quality of play as well as good old fashion sing-a-longs.
A good way to tell the quality of a set is to see what other professional musicians are hanging out backstage to catch the music and backstage was packed!
