The first thing you notice at a North Mississippi Allstars show is Luther Dickinson’s guitar tone. It’s clean and unmistakable as he rips through solos or just lays down a backing riff. And when they are done, you’re not sure if you just witnessed a jam session or a history lesson in Mississippi blues. At NMA’s core are brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson from Hernando, Mississippi. Rounding out the 3-piece is bassist Carl Dufrene. While the main lineup has Luther on guitar and Cody playing drums, Cody will, at times, play keys while playing bass, or step out front and don the washboard or guitar.
This sunny, main stage set showcased blues psychedelia at its finest. Showing what they grew up listening to with their legendary producer and session musician father Jim Dickinson. Nine minutes into the set and they were ripping through a 10-minute RL Burnside medley. 4 Peaks was glad to see NMA rocking the blues set in 2018.
